Friends of the Medal of Honor Grove, Freedom Foundation

VF MOAA is among the many Friends of the Medal of Honor Grove who meet twice a year, spring and fall to help maintain the Medal of Honor Grove on the property of the Freedoms Foundation, Valley Forge, PA.  Our chapter adopted three states’ memorial grounds, Washington, Alaska and Idaho – we generally have about 15 people who show up with rakes, tarps and a commercial leaf blower to pick up leaves, sticks and other debris, while also cleaning the obelisks.  For those of you not familiar with the Grove the following excerpt is provided. It is definitely a landmark if you live or are visiting the area.

“The Medal of Honor Grove is located on the campus of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. It is a 42 acre natural woodland and is designed as a living memorial to over 3,500 recipients of our nation’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor. A section of the Grove is designated for each of the 50 states, including our territories Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Each Medal of Honor Recipient is identified by a stainless steel marker with the name and military organization of the Recipient and the date and location of the act of valor. The recipient’s name is also inscribed on the state obelisk of which he/she entered service.” Source: friendsmohgrove.org

Fred Schiller has been coordinating VF MOAA member participation. Members bring enthusiasm, elbow grease and unwavering respect for those awarded the MoH. It becomes an educational endeavor for most participants as they discuss personal sacrifices for our great country and the valor of the men and women remembered there.
